Linseed oil (also known as Flaxseed oil) is produced from Linum usitatissimum. Many dogs are now deficient in Omega 3. All kibble foods, and indeed some raw foods, are high in omega 6, which is unbalanced for dogs health.  A balance of omega oils (3, 6 and 9), is required, which would naturally be obtained by consuming whole prey. Linseeds contain a high amount of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), which needs to be converted to EPA Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) to be used by the body. However, even though animal-based sources of omega oils may be easier for a dog to digest, unfortunately, most animal-based oils now come with high levels of contaminants and are therefore often not safe for dogs. Linseed oil, therefore, provides a great, safe alternative. When buying linseed oil, it is vital that you get cold-pressed oil. This ensures careful production, with no heat, ensuring the nutrients remain intact. Most animals do not have enough Omega 3s in their diet, whereas a wild dog, on natural prey, which in turn grazed on rich soil pasture, could get the right balance of Omega 3 to 6 in their diet. Today’s animals are not so lucky. Soil depletion and contamination means that most diets are short in Omega 3, which is essential to balance inflammation levels in the body.   Omega-3 Is an Essential Fatty Acid Dogs cannot make omega-3 in their body, so they must get it from their diet. Omega-3 is an essential building block in every cell in the body and is, therefore, key to good health. Omega 3s are a core part of a dogs diet, and we, therefore, make sure all our food recipes have balanced amounts. However, dogs are often starting from a deficiency, and may already have an existing condition, or live in contaminated or stressful environments, this is why having extra, to rebalance the body, is really key. Nutritional deficiencies associated with dogs include many chronic conditions, including arthritis, skin and coat problems, allergies and itching, muscle and joint issue, metabolic issues to name but a few. Increasing Omega 3s in your dog’s diet can help, with a balanced diet, to address many of these issues and help your dog thrive.
